Abstract

In an electronic document distribution network (EDD) comprising word processing terminals or workstations, documents to be considered for interchange are normally retained at the local workstation. The present system provides for enhanced storage capability wherein selected documents may be archived in a remote document library which is under the control of the host processor. Documents are placed in a remote document library for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is that the local word processing workstations have limited storage resources; they cannot easily accommodate large documents.

Library Services in an Electronic DOCUMENT Distribution Network Comprising Word Processing Work Stations

In order for a particular word processing workstation to have the capability to interface its communications linkage with a host processor which controls a remote document library wherein documents from the word processing station may be stored, certain basic expedients have to be put in place. 1. Filing Document in Library - A document is sent from the diskette associated with a local word

processing workstation to the host computer where it is

named and stored. Access codes can be assigned to

allow controlled access by other users. Descriptive

parameters can also be stored along with the document

for use in subsequent searches for access. 2. Distribute the Filed Document - A document filed in the host may be requested from the word processing

station to be distributed to other remote users by the

user who has filed the document (or by a user given

access to the document). 3. Retrieve Filed Document - A document filed in a

host may be retrieved by a selected word processing

workstation and stored on a diskette. 4. Delete File Document - A document filed in the host may be erased. 5. Search Library - The host can be reques...
