Abstract

Resistor-mounting mechanisms are described for vertically mounting ceramic wire-wound resistors on printed circuit boards. These mechanisms are less expensive and require less installation time than do presently used mechanisms. Fig. 1 shows a first embodiment which uses only a plastic holder 1 and a screw 2. The holder 1 may be mounted first on the printed circuit board 3 and then the resistor 4 snapped onto the holder 1. Alternatively, the holder 1 may be inserted into the resistor 4 and then screw-mounted to the board 3. The Fig. 2 embodiment employs a cylindrical sleeve 5 made of resilient spring-like material and having an opening 6 on one side which extends the entire length of the cylinder. The outside diameter of the sleeve 5 is somewhat larger than the diameter of the hole through the center of the resistor 4.

2. The holder 1 may be mounted first on the printed circuit board 3 and then the resistor 4 snapped onto the holder 1. Alternatively, the holder 1 may be inserted into the resistor 4 and then screw-mounted to the board 3. The Fig. 2 embodiment employs a cylindrical sleeve 5 made of resilient spring-like material and having an opening 6 on one side which extends the entire length of the cylinder. The outside diameter of the sleeve 5 is somewhat larger than the diameter of the hole through the center of the resistor 4. The sleeve 5 is necked down at one end 7 so that it can be pressed into a mounting hole in the printed circuit board 3. The sleeve 5 can then be wave-soldered or otherwise bonded to the board 3. The resistor 4 is thereafter pushed down onto the sleeve 5. The spring action of the compressed sleeve causes the sleeve 5 to grip the walls of the resistor center hole to thereby hold the resistor 4 in place.
