Abstract

The power of an all-points-addressable display is in its ability to display any pattern that can be created by controlling the on-off state of picture elements (pels) in a discrete matrix. Character boundary restrictions do not have to exist. With proper microcode control, graphics and facsimile data could be mixed with alphanumeric data. However, this requires that the display adapter be able to handle non-coded information (NCI) as well as coded information. Coded information consists of character codes and attributes that are used for table lookup in a character generator. In contrast, non-coded pel information is bit level data, transferred directly to the display. It is essentially a storage dump to the display. If the display is an AC plasma panel, its inherent memory feature reduces traffic from local storage.

To enable utilization of both coded and non-coded data, a microcode-controlled switch is provided at the display adapter to alter the control path in the data stream logic. When interpreting coded data, the logic must check for special codes, such as field attributes. Then, it must use the character code to form the address for the character generator.
