Abstract

A method is disclosed for creating form documents and entering specific information in form shields on these documents in a word processing environment in a data processing system. Particular problems of this environment include determining what can or cannot be modified in the form document and the requirement for exclusive cursor positioning to all input areas that can be modified as well as applying an editing function to data in columnar form. - The following functions are desirable in being able to fill in a form on a word processing terminal: The definition of the form must be easily accomplished by a clerical person. - The base form without input areas filled in must be reusable and easily called for. - Prompting of the form input areas should be possible.

Form Documents for a Text Editing Application

A method is disclosed for creating form documents and entering specific information in form shields on these documents in a word processing environment in a data processing system. Particular problems of this environment include determining what can or cannot be modified in the form document and the requirement for exclusive cursor positioning to all input areas that can be modified as well as applying an editing function to data in columnar form. - The following functions are desirable in being able to fill in a form on a word processing terminal: The definition of the form must be easily accomplished by a clerical person. - The base form without input areas filled in must be reusable and easily called for. - Prompting of the form input areas should be possible. - Cursor positioning to only the input areas should be possible. - It should be allowable to update fixed parts of the

form during input time. To achieve these functions, a special document, called a Form Document, was created. This is accomplished in a similar fashion to the creation of any other document except that a form document contains Form Fields. A Form Document is created in the following manner: - Key in a pair of "f's" around the area that is to be a Form Field. - Press Command Key which instructs the editor to

normal text. - The pair of "f's" can be done in any combination, and the data between the "f's" will be considered to be an

initial value of the form. Fig. 1 is a display of a document with pairs of "f's" inserted to define the placement of the Form Fields. Once the Command Key is pressed to create the Form Fields, the resulting display is shown in Fig. 2. The Form Fields are now underlined. The operator can now press another Command Key with the cursor positioned anywhere in the Form Field to apply additional functions to the...
