Abstract

To improve user flexibility in dual-use data processing terminals and to traverse the need for structured files produced by skilled programmers, file creation is rendered a simple user task by providing a facility such that the user merely produces a document, keying in the lists of data, e.g., names, addresses, etc., and enters the document as a data base document. For example, reference is made to Fig. 1 below: As will be noted, the document carries a line of field names, all preceded by an ampersand (i.e., .&). Since the data inserted under these field names calls for a strict format of alignment, form fields may be used to enter such data. In preparing a letter or other document, the required field names, preceded by the ampersand, are keyed and the body of the letter completed.

User-Created Document-Based Distribution Lists With Selection Criteria

To define which data base document is to be used, a command key calls for a "Services Display" from which the operator selects to see the list of data files, and this list is then displayed. From the data file list, the user keys in whatever options are desired for the selection of records, and also a type number to specify that each record selected will print another document as opposed to being printed as a list within one document. Where the user specifies an option to select only a portion of the records, a "Record Selection Test" screen is displayed and allows the user to specify which lines are to be used whe...
