Abstract

In preparing a document on a word processing system it is often desirable to include data from a data base file which is under control of a data processing system. In the past, this has often required significant programmer effort to achieve. We have devised a system which easily enables the system operator to select from a list of data base files, to peruse a list of data processing fields within the file, optionally format selected data, subset the amount of data presented by allowing the operator to select multiple selection conditions, and then present the data on a display and in a printed document in any desired format. In order to accomplish this the operator would use a Text Editor to create a document according to standard practice.

Copying of Data Base Data Into a Word Processing Document

In preparing a document on a word processing system it is often desirable to include data from a data base file which is under control of a data processing system. In the past, this has often required significant programmer effort to achieve. We have devised a system which easily enables the system operator to select from a list of data base files, to peruse a list of data processing fields within the file, optionally format selected data, subset the amount of data presented by allowing the operator to select multiple selection conditions, and then present the data on a display and in a printed document in any desired format. In order to accomplish this the operator would use a Text Editor to create a document according to standard practice. When editing the document the operator presses a Command Key to a Services Display which provides the operator with an option to copy data from a data base to a split display. When the operator selects the split display option and identifies the data base file required, a display showing the Field Selection/Ordering is presented. This display enables the operator to select the fields in the file that are to be used. The fields are selected by keying in numbers at each selected field. The numbers determine the sequence of the fields. The spacing of the fields can then be set by either specifying a spacing between fields or relying on a default condition which assures a...
