Abstract

This article concerns apparatus for automatically dispensing evaporation charges in the form of premeasured discs from a magazine to an evaporation vessel. The apparatus features a cam-driven shuttle having a charge-receiving cup whose bottom is formed by a movable shutter. Under the action of the drive cam, premeasured source pellets are received from the magazine, transported to the evaporation vessel, and discharged. In the course of automated evaporation processing, it becomes necessary to automatically replenish the charge being evaporated. In the past, this has been accomplished by feeding sections of wire to be evaporated by means of an indexing apparatus to the evaporation vessel.

In the course of automated evaporation processing, it becomes necessary to automatically replenish the charge being evaporated. In the past, this has been accomplished by feeding sections of wire to be evaporated by means of an indexing apparatus to the evaporation vessel. This technique, however, is subject to such problems as jamming, imprecisely measured amounts of charge, inability to assure deposit of the premeasured charge at the evaporation vessel, etc. The apparatus of this article overcomes these problems by automatically dispensing premeasured charge pellets at the evaporation vessel which have been received from a magazine. More particularly, and as shown in Fig. 1, apparatus 10 includes a magazine 12 having a cylindrical storage chamber 14 containing conforming pellets 16 of premeasured size to be dispensed at an evaporation vessel 15. Additionally, apparatus 10 includes a pellet receiving member 18 having a hole 20 which aligns with chamber 14 of magazine 12 for receiving discs 16, as shown. Additionally, apparatus 10 includes a slide 22, located beneath receiving member 18, to close off the bottom of hole 20 to define a disc-receiving cup 24. Continuing with reference to Fig. 1, apparatus 10 is seen to include a cam 26 having two cam surfaces 28 and 30. Receiving member 18 is provided with a cam follower 32 at end 34 of receiving member 18 which rides upon cam face 28.
