Abstract

The increasing use of switching power supplies has created some unique problems and possibilities. More primary voltage components, high levels of DC voltage, increased radiated noise, increased efficiency, less volume, lower weight, and design flexibility are some of the new aspects of switching power supplies. These permit alternate new ways of packaging the machine power supply. The drawing shows a power supply enclosed in covers that mate with machine covers to form a business machine having a continuous outline. Although switching power supplies are of primary interest, linear supplies can be used in this application if the various problems can be solved, most notably the excess heat generated by such supplies.

These permit alternate new ways of packaging the machine power supply. The drawing shows a power supply enclosed in covers that mate with machine covers to form a business machine having a continuous outline. Encasing the power supply in a section removable from the machine cover provides advantages as follows: 1) The basic machine contains only low voltages. 2) The power supply is customer replaceable.

3) The user can easily determine if the power supply

is inoperable.

4) The power supply is permanently shielded both

physically and to contain internally generated magnetic

radiation by its cover.

5) The basic machine is not changed for selling in

different countries, only the power supply need be

different.

6) The power supply may be used on several machine

models or types.

7) The power supply can be upgraded easily when

additional options are added to the machine.
