Abstract

Block lift-off correction for thermal ribbon printing is enhanced by varying the current level during the correction process or by controlling the turn-on or turn-off of the correction function. It has been found that thermally printed characters may be corrected by lifting them off of the print document and transferring them back to the print ribbon. The lift-off correction is accomplished by passing a lower current than the printing current through the ribbon when it is located in contact with a previously printed character. This causes the thermoplastic layer of the ribbon to tackify and adhere to the character that has been previously printed. The character thus adheres to the print ribbon and is caused to transfer from the print document back to the print ribbon.

It has been found that thermally printed characters may be corrected by lifting them off of the print document and transferring them back to the print ribbon. The lift-off correction is accomplished by passing a lower current than the printing current through the ribbon when it is located in contact with a previously printed character.

This causes the thermoplastic layer of the ribbon to tackify and adhere to the character that has been previously printed. The character thus adheres to the print ribbon and is caused to transfer from the print document back to the print ribbon. Erasure, like printing, is effected during relative motion of the document with respect to the printhead and ribbon. A block erase character can be formed by turning on all of the vertically aligned print electrodes during the relative movement of the printhead over the character box. This causes any character previously formed within a print box to be lifted off without necessitating the reprinting of the previously printed character in the erase mode and the misregistration problems occasioned thereby.
