Abstract

Multilayer ceramic (MLC) substrates are formed by laminating and sintering a stack of metallized ceramic green sheets. Presently, the green sheets are cast to the requisite width for an MLC substrate. Disclosed herein is a method and apparatus for improving the yield and throughput of the casting operation by casting the green sheet to the full caster width and then slitting the green sheet to MLC substrate sized webs. Preferably, a high pressure fluid slitter is used for slitting the wide green sheet. Referring to the figure, green sheet 1 is cast to the full width potential of caster 2. A fluid slitter apparatus 3, operating in the range of 60,000 PSI, is employed to slit the full width green sheet into individual webs 4. Fluid slitting eliminates feathering at the cut edges.
