Abstract

A universal pallet, comprised of a reusable base and changeable insert, is used to support products during product assembly and product testing. A power system, for supplying power to the product, can be housed in the reusable base. The interchangeability of the inserts enables a single base to support a wide range of different products. The reusable base is fabricated from injection molded plastic. It has a flat bottom which is designed to ride on different types of conveyor systems (not shown). Hand holds 8 (for lifting) and power receptacle slots 10 are molded in the respective side sections of the base. Each slot or recess is fitted with an elongated steel conductor identified by numerals 12, 14 and 16.

An electrical connector assembly 18 is connected by a plurality of cap screws and external lock washer assembly 20 to each of the conductors. The conductors pick up electrical power from a 3-wire wiper-type power distribution bus (not shown). The distribution bus is mounted on the conveyor sides (not shown) and includes a plurality of fixed electrical contacts against which the elongated steel conductors move. Connector 18 supplies electrical power to a product (not shown) riding on the insert. The insert or top section is vacuum formed from plastic and is designed to accommodate virtually any type of product.

The insert is mounted to the base section by a plurality of screws and elastic stop nuts. Each insert can be designed to accommodate on...
