Abstract

A plurality of control units selectively connects a plurality of hosts to a larger plurality of peripheral devices, such as magnetic tape recorders, disc recorders, communication modems, and the like. A control in each of the control units manages the channel adapters connecting the host to the control unit. Each control unit has a data processing portion called data flow and data buffer. Buses connect the channel adapters of all of the control units to the data processing portion of all of the control units. Any command received from a host via a channel adapter is processed by its associated control. When the channel adapter is exchanging data signals through a data processing portion of another control unit, the control of the channel adapter remains with the control unit receiving the command.

Buses connect the channel adapters of all of the control units to the data processing portion of all of the control units. Any command received from a host via a channel adapter is processed by its associated control. When the channel adapter is exchanging data signals through a data processing portion of another control unit, the control of the channel adapter remains with the control unit receiving the command. The receiving control unit supplies sufficient control information to the control portion of the control unit handling the data processing to facilitate transfer of data signals from the channel adapters to the peripheral devices. All host communication is provided through the receiving control unit. Control units 0 and 1 each have a plurality of channel adapters connected to a plurality of hosts. All of the channel adapters have a data bus indicated by the heavy line going to a data buffer and data flow within the same control unit. That data path proceeds through device adapters to a plurality of peripheral devices.
