Abstract

The immediately preceding article describes the use of an action table data entry terminal which permits the host application to describe activities which are to be performed when the operator depresses a key which would cause the cursor to leave a 'primed' field. One such action is to write a message at some buffer address. It is proposed that this message be permitted to include the 'Insert Cursor' order. With this capability, the host application is able to construct a display panel such that as any field is completed by the operator, the cursor can be moved non-sequentially to any other position in that panel, from which the operator can continue keystroking as usual. This should be contrasted with the normal situation in which the cursor would move to the first data position of the next field (honoring autoskip).

With this capability, the host application is able to construct a display panel such that as any field is completed by the operator, the cursor can be moved non-sequentially to any other position in that panel, from which the operator can continue keystroking as usual. This should be contrasted with the normal situation in which the cursor would move to the first data position of the next field (honoring autoskip). Thus, if an application wished to move the cursor in such a non-sequential manner, it could only achieve it by a host interaction. This facility frees the host application from the constraints of the hardware- imposed sequential movement of the cursor. For instance, a 'ship to' address to the right of other input fields in an order entry panel may be composed of four 25- character fields (name, street, city, county) vertically aligned; for the convenience of the operator when the 'name' field is completed, the cursor could be positioned ready for the 'street' portion and so on.
