Abstract

In a multi-user data processing system it is necessary to uniquely identify each user of the system in order to control access to the system and to correlate data processing jobs with users. This is typically done with a user ID which is assigned to each user of the system, and this user ID is provided to the system when the user logs on to the system. Uniqueness of user IDs is relatively easy to assure in data processing systems which are relatively local in nature as is characteristic of smaller systems. However, larger data processing systems are characterized by widely distributed offices interconnected in a communication network.

In a multi-user data processing system it is necessary to uniquely identify each user of the system in order to control access to the system and to correlate data processing jobs with users. This is typically done with a user ID which is assigned to each user of the system, and this user ID is provided to the system when the user logs on to the system. Uniqueness of user IDs is relatively easy to assure in data processing systems which are relatively local in nature as is characteristic of smaller systems. However, larger data processing systems are characterized by widely distributed offices interconnected in a communication network. Such large data processing systems may have been installed for a large corporation or simply have evolved from the combination of smaller data processing systems as a result of corporate mergers. In either case, uniqueness is often a problem when addressing users of a large data processing communication network. At any given time there may be more than one user in a data processing network with the same name or user ID. This problem is solved by defining the name of a user of a data processing network in such a way as to maximize the probability that the name defined will be unique within the data processing network.
