Abstract

Tetrabromobisphenol A and its derivatives are widely used as flame retardant components in industrially useful resins, for example, laminating resins for printed circuit boards. Using N-bromosuccinimide, an easily handled brominating agent, this compound can be prepared in yields greater than 90% at room temperature and in high purity.

Synthesis Of Tetrabromobisphenol A

Tetrabromobisphenol A and its derivatives are widely used as flame retardant components in industrially useful resins, for example, laminating resins for printed circuit boards. Using N-bromosuccinimide, an easily handled brominating agent, this compound can be prepared in yields greater than 90% at room temperature and in high purity.

A description of the preparation of this compound is as follows: A mixture of bisphenol A (l mole) and N-bromosuccinimide (4 moles) was stirred in dry DMF or dioxane overnight at room temperature. The reaction mixture then was taken in methylene chloride and washed with aqueous solution of sodium dithionate, water and dried. Evaporation of the solvent gave a slightly yellow solid which can be further purified by water washing. The yield is greater than 90% of theory. The purity of this compound by NMR is greater than commercially obtained samples.
