Abstract

To increase head life and to obtain a more consistent head-to-medium flying height distance throughout headlife, slots are provided in the head with at least one slot formed at an angle to the medium motion. The angled slot increases the flying height at the trailing edge to decrease trailing edge wear.

To increase head life and to obtain a more consistent head-to-medium flying height distance throughout headlife, slots are provided in the head with at least one slot formed at an angle to the medium motion. The angled slot increases the flying height at the trailing edge to decrease trailing edge wear.

A slotted spherical head is shown in the figure, having side shields 1 and 2, and a center section 3 containing the transducing gap 4. One slot 5 is formed in side shield 2 adjacent to the center section 3. A second slot 6 is formed in side shield 1 at an angle to the center section 3. Slots 5 and 6 will permit a good head-to-medium interface at the transducing gap for recording purposes. Slot 5 is placed adjacent to the center section 3, also to allow for the accurate measurement of the throat height of the transducer. The angled rail 6 provides an extra width at the trailing section 7 of the head, thereby increasing the amount of material at the trailing edge area 7 to decrease the wear rate. Further, the wider bearing area at the trailing edge 7 causes the medium-to-head flying distance to be increased.
