Abstract

The mechanism shown in Fig. 1 provides a means to index, at high speed, a multi-color ribbon for use on a printer with multi-color print capability. The multi-colored ribbon to be used with this mechanism is divided into four sections, as shown in Fig. 2.

The mechanism shown in Fig. 1 provides a means to index, at high speed, a multi-color ribbon for use on a printer with multi-color print capability. The multi- colored ribbon to be used with this mechanism is divided into four sections, as shown in Fig. 2.

One method of operating this mechanism is as follows: The printer receives the command to change color. At this time, the print head ramps to the home position. This opens the platen gap. The bullet on the print head contacts the ramp to force the platen away from the, head and the ribbon. The can then rotates to raise or lower the platform to a new position. This places a different color in front of the print wires. The platform rotates about a pivot and may be counterweighted and/or spring loaded. Printing may now resume. The ribbon platform will be held in this position until another color change command is received.

The method just described is a very basic method to shift colors, and it could be incorporated easily and inexpensively in most printers. The can may be rotated by an AC motor with an emitter, a rotary solenoid, a stepper motor, or a DC motor, However, it is time consuming to ramp the print head for each color shift.

To increase throughput, a solenoid may be used to push or pull the swing arm, opening the platen gap. Once the platen gap is opened, the platform can be pivoted to shift the color, as described above. The device to open the plated gap is not limited to a linea...
