Abstract

In display systems utilizing a cluster controller and a number of display stations dependent from the I/O bus of the controller by way of individual coax lines, most "intelligent" functions may be concentrated in the controller. In such cases, only relatively simple logical tasks, such as "search," would be carried out in the display station itself since the display station does not have a processor. This article describes an arrangement whereby such a display system can have a hybrid character in which it can operate in a "cluster" mode as above described and also in which the display station can have its own processor under control of which the display station can perform relatively elaborate off-line operations more typical of a so-called "intelligent" display.

Fig. 1 shows such a hybrid system. A control unit 10 has a coax connection 12 to a display unit 14. Unit 14 includes a display 16 having its own features 18, 20, 22, an expanded interface unit 24 which couples display 16 to line 12 via line 26, and a keyboard 28, functionally associated with display 16. Keyboard 28 is connected via 30 to 24 for transmission of keyboard data. When the display unit is operating under control of 10, the keyboard data is routed through 24 to 16 via 31 for transmission via 26 and 24 to 12 under control of 16. By its routing through 24, this data is also available for cooperation with a microprocessor 32 in
