Abstract

A matrix of red, green and blue transmission filters overlaid on a liquid crystal display provides multiple color capability. This matrix is suitable for liquid crystal flat panels, as shown in Fig. 1, or in laser-addressed liquid crystal projection displays, as shown in Fig. 2.

A matrix of red, green and blue transmission filters overlaid on a liquid crystal display provides multiple color capability. This matrix is suitable for liquid crystal flat panels, as shown in Fig. 1, or in laser-addressed liquid crystal projection displays, as shown in Fig. 2.

In Fig. 1, a liquid crystal flat panel 10 includes a glass substrate 12 on which red filters 14R, green filters 14G and blue filters 14B are mounted. The filters 14R, 14B and 14G are covered with a conductive/ protective coating 16. A plurality of picture elements 18 are mounted on a layer of polysilicon 20 which, in turn, is supported by a glass substrate 22. A layer of liquid crystal material 24 is positioned between the layers 16 and 20.

In Fig. 2, a beam of light from light source 30 passes through the liquid crystal plate 32 containing the picture elements 34 and then through the projection lens 36 to the color-mask plate 38 and screen 40. The plate 38 includes the red, green and blue filters 42R, 42G and 42B and the protective coating 44.

The color-mask plate 38 can be manufactured by a shadow-mask evaporation technique similar to that used to produce the phosphor screens on early color television tubes.
