Abstract

The present system provides for a technique for the testing of a communication system involving a word processing display terminal, a local modem, a linkage, a remote modem and a remote word processing display terminal. Where there is a communication system involving a pair of word processing work stations, and an error or problem arises in communication between the two word processing work stations, it is desirable to determine whether or not the problem is in the communications task between the two work stations or in the work stations themselves. If there is a problem within the path, then it would be desirable to determine where the problem exists, i.e., at the local work station, the local modem, the remote modem, the linkage or the remote work station.

The present system provides for a technique for the testing of a communication system involving a word processing display terminal, a local modem, a linkage, a remote modem and a remote word processing display terminal. Where there is a communication system involving a pair of word processing work stations, and an error or problem arises in communication between the two word processing work stations, it is desirable to determine whether or not the problem is in the communications task between the two work stations or in the work stations themselves. If there is a problem within the path, then it would be desirable to determine where the problem exists, i.e., at the local work station, the local modem, the remote modem, the linkage or the remote work station.

In an asynchronous communication network, the linkage between the local modem and the remote modem are full duplex. In a synchronous network the linkage in many cases is half duplex. In the case where the linkage is full duplex, testing is as described in the preceding article. The present disclosure will describe testing a synchronous communication protocol when the linkage between the local modem and the remote modem is half duplex.

When testing in a half duplex environment, the present system makes use of the arrangement wherein the local display word processor and the local modem are full duplex. This allows the system to be used to test both the send and receiving paths of the local word processor terminal and the local modem simultaneously. In order to test the half duplex linkage between the local and remote modems, the local word processor terminal will first test the send path by sending to the remote word processor terminal. If the remote terminal does not detect a problem, then the remote terminal will test the receive path by sending to the local terminal.
