Abstract

Automatic and continuous underscoring of characters, words or phrases is accomplished by depressing a "begin und" (begin underscore) key. This inserts a "BUS" (begin underscore) character into a text stream and signals the system to underscore all of the text following the "BUS" up to the next "end underscore" (EUS), or to the end of the page, whichever comes first. Depressing an "end und" (end underscore) key stops textual underscoring. Failure to press the "end und" key results in all of the text on the rest of the page being underlined. Correction of any unintentionally underlined text is made by simply placing a cursor at the location where underscoring was to be stopped and depressing the "end und" key.

Automatic Continuous Underscoring of Characters, Words or Phrases

Should the operator move or delete one of the BUS/EUS character pairs without moving or deleting the corresponding character, the system inserts the appropriate code at the end of the deleted or moved text in the "from" location and adds a BUS/EUS, if a BUS/EUS is being moved or deleted, in the 'to' location. If the text at the point of insertion is underscored, the system will place an EUS at the point of insertion and a BUS at the end in order to preserve the pre-existing underscoring.

Also, the underscoring on each line of text by the use of this auto underscore process will not extend beyond the last printing/displaying graphic on a line.
