Cover Latch

Two molded plastic parts include all elements required for resilient latching as integral parts with the molded elements.

Access to the interior of container 10 is obtained by lifting top cover 12 which is pivotally attached by shafts 15 and 16 at one end with respect to mating cover element 18. Cover 12 is molded as a single unit with two grooved striker plates 20 and 23 molded on one side of the end of cover 12 and striker plates 22 and 23 molded on the opposite side. Cover 18 includes matching, J-shaped latch elements, such as 25, with four of these J-shaped elements molded so as to engage respective strikers 20-23. The redundancy through multiple striker plates ensures reliability of operation in that latching is still obtainable even if all but one of the striker plates or latch elements are accidentally broken from either side. Cover 12 is lifted as by knob 26 or some other arrangement, such as finger grips and the like.

Fig. 2 illustrates the cross-section of striker plate 21 and its matching J- shaped component 25 and particularly shows the mating grooves and ridges associated with these elements.
