Hot Roll Fuser

A dry release hot roll fuser includes a hot roll whose silicone elastomer sleeve is unground; thus, its external surface is essentially free of the siliceous filler which is used throughout the elastomer for physical strength.

A mold is prepared with exact dimensional tolerance and internal surface finish. The hot roll's aluminum cylindrical core is accurately positioned in this mold so that a silicone elastomer, having a siliceous filler dispersed therein, may be poured or injected into the cavity between the core's external cylindrical surface and the mold's internal cylindrical surface. This cavity is of exact dimension since the cavity, and the surface finish of the mold's internal cylindrical surface, determines the shape and surface finish of the hot roll's elastomeric fusing sleeve.

When the elastomer has cured, the mold is opened and the hot roll is ready for any additional finishing operations required, without the usual final step of grinding the external surface of the elastomeric sleeve. The hot roll's elastomeric sleeve now contains an external skin which is essentially free of the elastomer's siliceous filler.
