Method for Searching the Occurrence Table of a Printer Control System

This article describes a process for searching the occurrence table contained in a memory device of a microprocessor control for a belt printer.

In microprocessor operated belt printers, a memory device is provided which stores an occurrence table. The table contains an occurrence count which indicates the number of times each distinct character occurs on the type belt along with position data which identifies the location of each distinct character relative to a fixed or reference position of the type belt. The position data is recorded in the form of the number of subscans. The type position on the belt is separated from the reference position.

The microprocessor utilizes the occurrence table for building a print position fire table arranged in sub-scan order relative to any line of characters to be printed. In doing this, the microprocessor refers to the occurrence table to determine the presence of a desired character relative to a particular print position and, if a valid occurrence is identified, suitable data is recorded in the print position fire table for the subscan when printing is to occur.

Referring to the flow chart in Fig. 1, the microprocessor for each character to be printed first fetches the first occurrence associated with that character in the occurrence table. The first occurrence is compared with the value B, as shown in decision block 10.
