Abstract

A plurality of tape volumes, V's, store data for one or more hosts. For each tape volume, a record in a dataset not in the tape volume identifies the volume (VOLID) as well as describing the occupied space of the tape volume and the space used to store valid data. The central dataset contains control data which is updated every time a dataset is written to the volume or when a dataset on the volume becomes invalid. Upon command or upon a periodic basis, the records in the central dataset are scanned. When the proportion of valid data reaches a certain threshold, the valid data remaining in the tape volume is moved another tape volume, while invalid data is ignored. The tape volume then is made free to be used for data storage.
