Bidirectional Dual-Station Printer

This article describes a bidirectional dual station matrix printer in which both sides of sheets of paper are printed upon.

The drawing shows the paper feed is such that the paper is fed past two print stations. Print head 1 prints on one side of the sheet, and print head 2 on the other side.

Both print heads are bidirectional, and print head 2 prints 'upside down'.

The paper feed path may be such that both print heads start at the top of a page simultaneously, although the printer controls ensure that print head 2 prints the relevant even numbered pages on the back of the relevant odd numbered pages. Thus print head 1 may be printing page 5, while print head 2 is printing page 2 on the back of page 1.

To enable printing of multi-part paper (copies) print head 2 can be disabled. and this machine can be used as a 'normal' printer.
