Symmetrical load distribution between the hot roll and backup roll of a copier is obtained by a frame loaded at a single point with an adaptive coupling of one of the rolls in the frame.

Hot roll frame 10 consists of two side plates 11 and 12 attached to an aluminum extrusion 15. Screws 16 and 17 pass through tight-fitting clearance holes in the side plates 11 and 12 and are tightened to hold the plates firmly against extrusion 15. Screws 18 and 19, as well as 20 and 21, are either shoulder screws or standard screws which pass through loose-fitting clearance holes in plates 11 and 12 and which are tightened adequately to hold plates 11 and 12 against extrusion 15. Screws 18-21 are kept from loosening such as through interference fits between the threads thereof and extrusion 15. Screws 18-21 serve to hold plates 11 and 12 against extrusion 15 while allowing plates 11 and 12 limited freedom to pivot around screws 16 and 17. Thus when the rolls are initially loaded together as by causing hot roll 25 to engage backup roll 26, a load imbalance forces the side plates 11 and 12 to realign. This results in s more symmetrical load at the nip nip between rollers 25 and 26 by establishing a more parallel condtion between these rolls. The load is applied at the center of the frame, as indicated generally by downward arrow 30 onto ridge 31. The entire frame 10 pivots around shaft 32, which is relatively rigidly attached to frame 35.
