Difficulties associated with referencing various lengths of paper when documents are fed onto a glass of a center referencing copier or the like are overcome by an automatic adjusting arrangement.

Paper 10 is placed on entry tray 12 with its leading edge positioned against the nip of the gate roller 14 and entry roller 15. Handle/pointer 18 is moved to indicate the trailing edge of sheet 10.

This causes sensors S1 and S2 to straddle the trailing edge with S1 open and S2 closed. When this condition occurs, the semiautomatic document feeder (SADF), after an appropriate delay, starts feeding sheet 10 which advances at normal speed until sensor S4 senses the leading edge of the sheet as it enters onto document glass 20. The SADF motor begins stepping to produce a reduced sheet velocity until sensor S3 detects the presence of the sheet at which time the motor is stopped, leaving the sheet on glass 20 in a registered position.

The sensor pair S3/S4 is coupled to sensor pair S1/S2 by the closed loop cable 25 which is arranged around pulleys 31-34, as shown. Handle/ pointer 18 is likewise connected to cable 25 such that its proper positioning relative to the trailing edge of sheet 10 on entry tray 12 causes sensors S3 and S4 to be appropriately positioned for correct sheet registration after feeding.
