Abstract

Pre-dispersed Al(2)0(3) is prepared by jar-milling for 48 hours a 40 percent w/w loaded solution of 10 percent polyvinyl methyl ethyl ether (PVME) in solvent. PVME, acting as a surfactant, stabilizes the dispersion of Al(2)O(3) after the milling action has reduced and segregated the Al(2)O(3) aggregates. A weighed amount of this premilled Al(2)O(3)/PVME/solvent blend is then added to the ball mill prior to the milling operation so as to produce a disk coating with the correct concentration of Al(2)O(3).

Optical microscope comparisons of solutions milled in PVME/ solvent vs. EPON*/solvent of different dilutions showed a lower incidence of grouped particles in PVME/solvent blends. Previous dispersion studies had verified the capability of PVME to stabilize dispersions of Al(2)O(3) better than EPON resin. Finally, particle size distributions (Sedigraph and Coulter counter) of pre- dispersed Al(2)O(3) vs. raw material Al(2)0(3) showed a 30-46 percent reduction in mean size of Si(2)O(3) as well as at least a 50 percent reduction of particles larger than 3 u. * Trademark of Shell Chemical Co.
