A servo head 1 and one or more data heads 2 are disposed on the trailing edge of an air-bearing slider 3. The servo head is preferably an MR (magnetoresistive) sensor, but may also be an inductive head. The data heads are formed-by an MR read sensor and an inductive write element.

A servo head 1 and one or more data heads 2 are disposed on the trailing edge of an air-bearing slider 3. The servo head is preferably an MR (magnetoresistive) sensor, but may also be an inductive head. The data heads are formed-by an MR read sensor and an inductive write element.

Separate electrical leads 4 and 5, respectively, carry readout signals from the MR read sensor and write signals to the write element. The electrical lead 6 provides a common signal path for the read and write functions.

The proximity of the servo and data heads on the same slider reduces undesirable effects of vibration and thermal variation. Also, write-to-read magnetic coupling is eliminated.
