The particulate contamination of a wide traveling web of polymer film is measured by the use of a Coulter counter.

If the manufacture of coated polymer films requires film cleaning prior to coating, then the effectiveness of this cleaning step may be periodically monitored without introducing additional contamination.

A pair of petri dishes are cleaned. and the annular edges thereof are then coated with an adhesive while in a clean room or a clean hood.

The coating production line is momentarily stopped, and the two petri dishes are glued in aligned fashion, one to each side of a mid-portion of the stationary film, just downstream of the film cleaning station. A sharp knife is now used to remove a small portion of the film which includes the petri dishes. The production line now restarts with only slight interruption.

The portion of the film trapped in the clean environment of the mating petri dishes is now removed to a clean environment, and the particle content of this surface of the film is determined by standard Coulter counter techniques.
