Variable Character Height In Multiple Beam Cathode Ray Tube

This article relates to multiple-beam cathode ray tubes. In particular, such such a tube which is capable of displaying characters of variable height is shown above.

Normally, multiple-beam cathode ray tubes have been designed to write and display characters of a single predetermined height. Components of such cathode ray tubes have a deflection yoke 10 and a focusing lens 12. With the final accelerating electrode 18 of the tube on the left side, a pair of rotation-free electron lenses 14 and 16 are positioned between the final accelerating electrode and the main focusing lens 12.

The two lenses 14 and 16 provide electrical control of the character height as illustrated by solid lines depicting a small character height and dashed lines depicting a larger character height. The strength of the focusing lens would also require adjustment when the character size is changed.
