Character Highlighting

An inexpensive technique for highlighting printed characters on a raster scan printer is described.

On a electrophotostatic printer. a gray background behind a line of text enhances the black portion of the text characters because of the charge characteristics of the photoconductor.

Forcing every other pel (print element) to black creates the gray background behind a line without destroying character integrity. Some character resolution is lost, of course, but characters appear only slightly digitized. This technique works best on a printer where the white print element is larger than the black print element,
i.e., the image source erases the white rather than writes the black.

The method for implementing this technique depends on the character pel pattern storage medium and the printing system. Dotting every other data line to black is one technique that could be used.
