Selection Mechanism

A selection mechanism has been designed for selecting different axial displacements by adding displacements of a number of selected face cams.

On a grooved shaft 1 a series of face cams 2, 4, 6 with corresponding axial grooves are disposed which can slide axially on the shaft and are rotated with the shaft. Cooperating with each cam 2, 4, 6 there is a follower 3, 5, 7, respectively, with face profiles corresponding to the facing cam profiles and with a step or notch on their circumferential outer suqfaces which may be blocked by selecting pins or pawls 9. The followers have smooth cylindrical inner surfaces, enabling them to rotate freely on shaft 1 and to slide thereon axially.

When a follower is blocked, it will move axially when shaft 1 and the corresponding cam are rotated over 180 degrees. If not blocked, the follower will rotate with the cam and no axial displacement occurs. The cam and follower pairs have different profiles corresponding to one or more units of axial displacement, and s series of axial displacements may be selected by choosing the proper combination of followers to be blocked.

The first cam 2 is fixed on shaft 1 or rests against the side frame 10 while the selected axial movement is taken from the right hand side by a grooved ring 11 and a lever 12, preferably on the high dwell and notch side of the followers, for the best force transmission.
