Abstract

In wire matrix printers. the platen is conventionally either a roller or the flat side of a bar against which the print wires are struck. Between the print wires and the bar is inserted a ribbon and forms in which the forms may have a variable thickness depending on the number of copies desired. It is necessary to adjust the distance between the print head and the platen to compensate for the various forms thickness and this conventionally may be done by moving the print head.

In wire matrix printers. the platen is conventionally either a roller or the flat side of a bar against which the print wires are struck. Between the print wires and the bar is inserted a ribbon and forms in which the forms may have a variable thickness depending on the number of copies desired. It is necessary to adjust the distance between the print head and the platen to compensate for the various forms thickness and this conventionally may be done by moving the print head.

The platen shown in the figure is a bar having eight sides, seven of which may be used as impact surfaces for the print head. The bar has an offset center so that rotation of the platen provides a cam-type action. For instance, rotation in the counterclockwise direction, stopping at each flat surface, moves each successive individual surface .005 inch further away from the print head. On the other hand, rotation in the clockwise direction provides the opposite effect, moving each surface closer to the print head.

The platen may be assembled in the printer itself by attaching a shaft extending from each end of the platen into a bearing in the printer frame. Rotation may be controlled by a numbered knob with a detent. The platen may be injection molded plastic or extruded metal.
