Paste Extrusion Head for Screen Printing Apparatus

The paste extrusion head, useful in injection printing apparatus of the type described in U.S. Patent 3,384,931, is provided with a mesh screen adjacent the nozzle opening.

The paste extrusion head 10 has a tube 12 with a slidable plunger 14 biased with a piston (not shown) that applies pressure to the paste material 16 contained in the tube. The paste 16 is forced out of an opening 18 in nozzle 20 into contact with mask 22 which overlies a ceramic sheet or other substrate 24. In operation, the paste is forced into contact with the ceramic sheet 24 through openings in mask 22.

The improvement is providing a mesh screen 26 in the bottom of tube 12 over opening 18. The paste, prior to exiting from the opening 18, must-pass through the mesh screen 26. This effectively removes any contaminants and particles which can clog mask-features and via holes in the green sheet, breaks up any air bubbles in the paste which might otherwise form openings in the printed pattern, refreshes the paste, and prevents paste dripping during the return stroke of the head.
