Abstract

To coat flexible media, a web of the media substrate is conducted past the metered source of the coating fluid and a pliable, smoothing film is placed against the web by a variable tension force membrane. The smoothing film can include a fold at the trailing edge to improve the quality of the trailing edge. A smoothing film with the fold can be made by passing two layers of the film between pressure rollers.

To coat flexible media, a web of the media substrate is conducted past the metered source of the coating fluid and a pliable, smoothing film is placed against the web by a variable tension force membrane. The smoothing film can include a fold at the trailing edge to improve the quality of the trailing edge. A smoothing film with the fold can be made by passing two layers of the film between pressure rollers.

A substrate for the coated media in the form of a web is conducted through a metered zone in which a controlled amount of a coating liquid is provided on the web. A fluid-containing membrane bears against a portion of the web in contact with a roller. A smoothing film is interposed between the force and the roller. The metering zone is adjacent to the confluence of the web and the smoothing film such that the hydrodynamic pressure exerted upon the coating liquid by the confines of the web and the smoothing film generates a smooth even coating. The smoothing film provides a finished surface for the fluid coating.
