In the manufacturing of MLC modules, several standoffs are placed on the module pins by automatic tooling. When the modules are assembled to cards, these standoffs provide a space between the module and card to insure good cleaning following various module to card soldering operations.

For various reasons, individual module standoffs must be removed or replaced at second level assembly areas. Presently, this is done by using a set of tweezers with notches cut in the ends for holding the standoff. When replacing a standoff with this tool, each standoff must be picked up, placed over the pin, and then pushed onto the pin. This tool is somewhat cumbersome, and the pin receiving the standoff or adjacent pins surrounding it may easily be bent during this operation.

The new tool consists of a plunger and a cylinder into which many standoffs can easily be loaded by just pressing on top of them and filling the cylinder. The last standoff is held in place by the spring action of the cylinder end which is slotted and tapered. To place a standoff on e pin, the tool is placed over the top of the pin and the plunger depressed, allowing a standoff to remain on the pin. The amount the plunger is depressed is controlled by indentations in it and a ball and spring inside the cylinder which allows the plunger to move only one standoff height at a time.
