In this method and apparatus, various cleaning solvents are allowed too impinge on a slide coated with a test material, usually a paste or other thin film, and the cleaning action of the solvents on the test material systematically evaluated.

In the fabrication of various products, molds and masks must be regularly cleaned to remove residual molding and paste material. The selection of a suitable solvent for cleaning masks and molds is important. A systematic method for evaluating and comparing such solvents is presented in this article.

In the testing apparatus, glass slides 10 are coated with the material to be tested using a technique for giving a reproducible and controlled thickness, and the coated slide is mounted on slide holder 12 at approximately a 45' angle to perpendicular. The solvent to be tested is placed in dropping funnel 14, and the stop cock 16 is turned 180 degrees allowing a fine stream of solvent, of the order of 0.20 to 0.25 millimeter total volume, to drop on coated slide 10. After a suitable interval of time has elapsed, on the order of 10 seconds, the stop cock is again turned to deliver a second volume of test solvent. The spent solvent is collected in container 18. The process is repeated until the area cleaned of paste extends to the bottom of the slide 10, the cleaned area having a shape, known as a "test pattern", that is characteristic for the particular paste/solvent combination under test.
