Carrier For Small Cylinders Of Compresser Gas

Small gas cylinders can be safely carried in a removably sealed metal tube having an integral pressure gauge for leak detection.

In manufacturing and testing facilities, small cylinders ("lecture cylinders", about 5 cm in diameter by 40 cm long) containing toxic or explosive gases must frequently be hand-carried from one place to another. Carrier 10 has an aluminum tube 11 lined with soft foam 12 and capped by welded aluminum plates 13, 14. Plate 14 is open, and mates with round cover plate 15, which carries a rubber O-ring 16 in a groove. Through holes 17 and threaded holes 18 allow bolts 19 to seal plate 15 to plate 14 after a gas cylinder has been inserted into tube 11. Pressure gauge 20 is threaded through the wall of tube 11; any leak of the cylinder can then be detected by noting a pressure rise on gauge 20. Carrier 10 can be conveniently transported by means of handle assembly 21 mounted on tube 11, and can be set down without rolling, in such a position that gauge 20 can be readily seen, if at least one of the plates, such as plate 14, has a square shape.
