Abstract

The initial program load (IPL) for a video display system normally contains a set of initial document format default values. Disclosed is a method of providing an operator with the capability of overriding the initial document and alternate format values on a page, line, or mid-line character basis by format change to suit the operator's requirements. A key concept is that these format changes are stored in the document as "fixed formats". That is, a format change records the values displayed on the format change menus for each formatting option whether or not the value was selected and changed by the operator. Therefore, the values stored will be either the value(s) selected and entered by the operator or a value shown on a menu when a key is pressed.

Format Control Functions

The initial program load (IPL) for a video display system normally contains a set of initial document format default values. Disclosed is a method of providing an operator with the capability of overriding the initial document and alternate format values on a page, line, or mid-line character basis by format change to suit the operator's requirements. A key concept is that these format changes are stored in the document as "fixed formats". That is, a format change records the values displayed on the format change menus for each formatting option whether or not the value was selected and changed by the operator. Therefore, the values stored will be either the value(s) selected and entered by the operator or a value shown on a menu when a key is pressed.

The document format options apply to the document as a whole, and are implicitly in effect at the beginning of the document. The alternate format, as disclosed herein, allows the operator to specify a second, or alternate, format for a document. The operator may then specify which format, document or alternate, is to be used for any given set of pages. The alternate format can be used for envelopes, tables, etc., where a departure from the document format is desired.

If an operator changes an option in the document or alternate format and wants the change to be in effect for all parts of the document, the operator must visit each subsequent format change within the document and update the option to match the document or alternate format. The format changes made will immediately be "in effect" for only those parts of the document from the point of the format change to the next format change or the end of the document subject to the format propagation rules of the system. As disclosed, these rules dictate that whenever the operator creates any type of format change, the new format is immediately propagated from the cursor position to the end of the cursored page. New formats are propagated across page boundaries only by the following: cursor down, boundary down, find, implicit find, and paginate document task. New formats are not propagated across page boundaries by the "go to" function. "In effect" means that the scale line format change menus and subsequent formatting operations (i.e., auto carrier return, auto line adjust, single line adjust, and the paginate task) will reflect the new, current value of the option in the format change. Note, however, that the text affected by the format change will not automatically be reformatted based on the new value of the option in the format change until the operator invokes one of the formatting operations.

Procedurally, if a cursor is positioned at the first character position of a page and one of the "page options" from the format change page options menu or the format change header/footer menu is changed, then a page format change is created. If the option changed is one of the "line options" from the format chang...
