A hopper including a V-shaped document stop is disclosed which provides separation of single sheet documents from a stack of documents by a high friction feed roll placed near the point of the V.

Fig. 1 shows a side view of the document hopper including the document lift 11 and feed wheel 13. Document lift 11 biases documents 15 against stack retention rolls 17. Document stop 19 holds the leading edges of the documents in alignment. When high friction feed roll 13 is advanced, the top sheet of documents is forced against document stop 19 at the edges of the document, causing the edges to buckle upward reducing friction between the top document and the remaining documents of the stack.

Fig. 2 shows an end view of the document feed with an exemplary V-shape for document stop 19.
