Interaction Isolation of Mechanical Actuators

In an array of printer actuators the electromagnets are mounted on an intermediate structure which is mounted directly on a common base plate. The mechanical interaction between printer actuators is avoided by providing a low mechanical impedance between the actuator devices and the common mounting substrate.

In the figures, a magnetic assembly 10 of a multi print actuator array is mounted on actuator support 11 which in turn is fixed to base plate 12. Magnet assembly 10 is coupled to support 11 solely via the lossy elastomer layers 13. A suitable elastomer is butyl rubber. Layers 13 are located for attachment to support 11 and magnet assembly 10 such that attachment is made on a line through the center of gyration of magnet assembly 10. This arrangement acts to decouple shock forces produced by armature 14 upon impact with the pole pieces of electromagnetic core 15 and with back stop 16. The decoupling effect of layers 13 prevents transmission of shock forces to adjacent actuators.
