Abstract

Columns of equal width are achieved automatically by data processing techniques using a single space or any sequence of spaces after each column entry as the designation of the end of column. The columns are counted, and the distance between full right margin (global right) and full left margin (global left) is divided by the number of columns to achieve the factor by which each column is spaced from the other.

Column Equalization

Columns of equal width are achieved automatically by data processing techniques using a single space or any sequence of spaces after each column entry as the designation of the end of column. The columns are counted, and the distance between full right margin (global right) and full left margin (global left) is divided by the number of columns to achieve the factor by which each column is spaced from the other.

The column information is first keyed in at a word processing station with a single space after each entry. The display is as shown in Example A, and random access data processing memory stores corresponding information. An alternative input is shown in Example B in which each column is designated by one or more sequential spaces. The first entry of the first (left) column is then designated by a cursor or equivalent technique by the system operator, and the system operator depresses a function control key for column equalization.
