Error Handling During Merge Processing

This article describes a means for specifying the type and location of errors encountered during merge processing on an information processing system. Merge processing integrates operator menu choices with predefined control language to produce the function control program for the system.

The efforts recognized by the Merge Task may be split into two classes: setup errors and execution errors.

A setup error is an error which prevents Merge from initially executing. These errors are handled via a message to the operator. The operator may then rekey the setup information in the Merge Setup menus and re-enter the menu. The following Merge Setup errors are recognized on an appropriate message displayed to the operator: 1. Shell Diskette not loaded. 2. Shell Document does not exist. 3. Fill-In Diskette not loaded. 4. Fill-In Document does not exist. 5. Diskette for Merged Document not loaded. 6. Merged Document name already exists. 7. Shell, Fill-In, or Merged Document needs recovery. 8. Diskette of Shell, Fill-In, or Merged Document needs recovery. 9. Invalid Menu Choices.

An execution error is one which will cause the merge process to abort if Cancel on Error is set to "Yes". If Cancel On Error is set to "No", the system will inform the operator that an error has occurred, and will attempt to find all other errors in this version of the shell.
