Document Query Negation Facility

The technique discussed herein is intended to enhance the discrimination potential of natural language query processing by integrating into the natural language format the ability to imply a Boolean "AND" condition. The logic processing discussed can be applied to any natural language query processing apparatus or program.

The natural language negation capability follows from splitting the query process into two separate segments. The first segment is the natural language retrieval statement which describes the document(s) requested in the same manner that they would be described to a person to manually find them by reviewing the documents in a filing drawer. Upon the completion of the descriptive query, the system prompts the operator with a request to describe any negation. For example, "Please indicate any limitations on the scope of this query. Describe any documents you do not want the system to consider in processing your query." If the operator enters any information, it is analyzed in the normal query processing manner and documents containing such information have their retrieval potential appropriately reduced by the query processor.

Alternatively, the negation query can be initiated by the operator without necessitating a system prompt by using a "lead" word such as "not" with leading and trailing parentheses, and then following the lead word with a description of the documents that the user does not wish the original q...
