Density Control of Polyurethane Foam

The specific gravity of a polyurethane foam premix is monit red and controlled as a means of controlling the density, and thus the paper feed characteristics, of foam paper feed rollers.

The manufacture of flexible polyurethane foam involves the mixing, and subsequent casting, of polyisocyanate and a polyol. A foam cellular structure is created by adding a low boiling point, inert solvent, such as FREON 113*.

The specific gravity of this mixture is monitored, prior to casting, and is maintained at a desired level, such that the cast products, in this case paper feed rollers, have consistent and known density. A simple hydrometer test is sufficient to monitor the specific gravity of the mix. * Trademark of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co.
