Abstract

Prior to sealing the walls of the drilled holes, which ultimately are used as plated through holes (PTHs), of an epoxy-glass laminate, a dry plasma etch is used to remove the epoxy-glass smear, which is the result of the hole drilling operation. The plasma etch removes the smear over the cracks and hollow fiber ends and is superior to smear removal wet process types which leave ionic contaminants in the cracks, etc., and thereby reduce the effectiveness of the subsequently applied seal and of the eventual plating of the hole wall.
