Abstract

Logic for a word processor with column layout capability automatically sets column heading tab stops at positions corresponding to the center of the longest text entry for each column. These column heading tab stops are set as an incident to the setup operations for the text column tab stops, but become active only when the operator keyboards a centering request after the column setup is completed.

Logic for Centering Column Headings with a Word Processor

Logic for a word processor with column layout capability automatically sets column heading tab stops at positions corresponding to the center of the longest text entry for each column. These column heading tab stops are set as an incident to the setup operations for the text column tab stops, but become active only when the operator keyboards a centering request after the column setup is completed.

The logic for centering column headings is preferably incorporated in the column layout logic. As a part of the column setup procedures, when the longest column entries have been keyboarded and text column tab stops have been defined, the heading logic sets column heading tab stops at positions corresponding to the centers of the respective longest words. The heading logic thus includes a procedure for counting to the center of the longest words associated with each text column tab stop taking into account the column tab stop position which has been defined.

The stored tabs are only activated if the operator keyboards (e.g., using a predefined chord keying operation) a command for a centering operation while in the column layout mode of operation. Text keyed between centering commands is located according to the column heading tab stops whereas other text keyboarded in the column layout mode of operation is treated as text to be arranged in columns according to the text column tab stops. As an alternative, an ad...
