Count By 3 Circuit

Clocked shift register latches (SRLs) may be used to construct a count by 3 circuit using Exclusive-ORs (XORB), as shown in Fig. 1.

The F(i) inputs are generated by a circuit as shown in Fig. 2. The circuit will count up by 3 on each cycle of the shift clocks (which are not shown). Given an initial SRL load of ell 0's, the count begins at 0 and is cyclic. For the 5-bbit counter shown, the count sequence is as follows: (see original). The count can be started at any point by initializing the SRLs with the desired binary value.
